The United States President Donald Trump has announced today that the US will be designating the left-wing militant movement Antifa as a terrorist organization.

He made the announcement on Twitter Sunday afternoon following tweets that projected the movement of perpetrating violence during the ongoing protests over the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The tweets read;

“The United States of America will be designating Antifa as a Terrorist Organization.

“Congratulations to our National Guard for the great job they did immediately upon arriving in Minneapolis, Minnesota, last night,” Trump wrote.

“The Antifa led anarchists, among others, were shut down quickly. Should have been done by Mayor on first night and there would have been no trouble!”

The announcement came amid a surge in violence across American cities on Saturday night.

Several of the protests, which initially started out peaceful, have erupted into clashes that have injured many and left both police property and private businesses destroyed.

However, in a recent video by the White House, United States President, Donald Trump condemned the violent acts being carried out in the protests.

A handful of states have since mobilized their national guards in an attempt to quell the violence.

The Antifa group is a movement saddled with the goal of fighting against European fascists which began in the 1920s and 1930s.

The name Antifa is short for anti-fascists, which comprise of several activist groups in the United States that have been known to use direct action or physical violence to resist white supremacists or neo-Nazis at demonstrations.
